Once Again, Reluctant Mother is Conflicted

Grandma’s or Bust!

We seem to be falling into a new sleep pattern.  And I’m not sure what to make of it.

For a while now, Mac has been sleeping about 10-12 hours per night with a 2-4 hour nap during the day.

Yes.  It’s been positively magical.

Currently, while he’s still sleeping the same amount of time nearly every day, he’s switched up the times on me.  And while I realize I shouldn’t be complaining, that’s never stopped me.

We had a good thing going.  He’d get up about 8:30, be ready to nap by noon, sleep until about 3 and be ready for bed again at 8:30.

But Sunday we had a birthday party that started at 11:30.  So he didn’t get the proper nap and ended up having a nap very late.  Which lead to a late bedtime. . .which has now morphed into a pattern that looks like this:  Gets up at 9:30.  Sleeps from 2 to 5 or 3 to 6 and doesn’t want to go to bed again until 9:30 or sometimes even 10:30.

Yes.  It’s crushing me.

By 9:30 at night I’m getting close to collapsing and just the idea of chasing him around the house exhausts me.

It’s also a tad inconvenient in the mornings.  I’m not a morning person and when he was getting up earlier, I could get us out the door for a walk enabling me to amuse him with little need for being completely perkily engaged and while the weather was cooler.  But if he’s not up until 9:30, it’s at least 10:30 until we get out the door and the heat and humidity gets a little much.  Plus, while he’s sleeping, I’m basically wandering around like a zombie unable to focus on anything, wasting precious time because I’m NOT A MORNING PERSON!

I now how you’re supposed to shift sleeping patterns around by inching bedtimes and nap times forward or backward in 15 minute increments. . .I’ve also considered not allowing him to nap so long one afternoon in the hopes that he crashes early that night and we get back to our old ways.

But what kinda’ sicko parent interrupts a 3 hour nap?!

So while I understand what I’m supposed to be doing in theory, I’m not exactly inclined to do it. . .Which is pretty much the over-arching theme of my entire existence.

  1. Ah, sleep. Why can’t it be easy? I don’t agree with interrupting naps either. In my mind, once you cut a nap short, you may create a precedence. Trust me – I’ve done it, and it’s never good. So my suggestion is to either wake him or put him to bed a little earlier everyday. Like, 10 minutes earlier, so it’s not that big a deal. But it’ll get you back to where you want to be!

Thank you. Chris and I agreed either tomorrow or Sunday, we’ll get him up at the “typical time” in the morning (between 8 and 8:30). That should make a nap necessary by lunch time and we should be back on track. It absolutely floors me how one day. . .one nap on one day completely threw a wrench into this little darlings schedule. I see the older he gets, the more he’s prone to “routine.” When he was younger, we could pretty much do whatever the hell we wanted to the little guy with little ill effect. Ha! However, as long as he’s sleeping well, I’ll take routine. 🙂

  2. How did it go on the weekend? It’s funny – Bubbs slept until 8:00 on Sunday, which is unheard of in this household. She typically gets up between 6:00 and 7:00, so 8:00 felt like Christmas. She has always been sensitive when it comes to sleep – she doesn’t sleep “on the go” and has to follow her routine or things get wonky. I put her down for naps and bed based on the total number of hours awake rather than a set time, but it inevitably works itself out. Like on Sunday – she was up at 8:00, but then pooped during her nap and only slept for an hour and 15 minutes, so bedtime didn’t change.

I hope you guys are back on track. Funny how accustomed we get to our routine, isn’t it?
